When you’re feeling really lazy and need a quick snack, Nutella on toast is a great go-to.
It’s quick, easy and downright delicious.
But sometimes the shops will be sold out of actual Nutella and own brand is your only option.
Which got me thinking – could something actually be better than Nutella?
I decided to do a taste test to find out once and for all.
Nutella
Nutella never disappoints.
It’s rich, creamy and so very smooth.
There’s a perfect hazelnut flavour coupled with perfect sweetness that goes so well on everything from toast to apple slices.
Although it has always been a bit sweet for my liking, I can’t fault anything else.
Total score: 4/5
M&S
On first look, this spread was somehow even smoother than the original.
As I dug my spoon in, I was surprised at seeing lots of little air bubbles in the spread.
You don’t get that with Nutella.
This spread was a lot less sweet than Nutella and tasted much more intensely of hazelnuts.
Maybe it’s personal preference but I could happily eat the roasty chocolate spread straight from the jar all day.
Though I’m not sure my teeth would like that.
Total score: 5/5
Lidl
In appearance, Lidl’s spread was exactly the same as the original Nutella.
But the taste was not as satisfying.
Instead of the wonderful uniform hazelnut flavour, I got several levels of unpleasantness.
First there was an intense hit of sugar, followed by a certain plastic taste and all rounded off with the taste of burnt hazelnuts.
Total score: 1/5
Tesco
While Lidl’s flavour was bad, this one had no flavour at all.
It was like eating a spoon of white sugar with none of the “deep, chocolatey flavour” advertised on the jar.
Although there was a metallic aftertaste I can’t say I enjoyed.
Total score: 0/5
The verdict
I thought nothing could beat the original Nutella, but I was wrong.

M&S’s spread was just that little bit more rich and nutty, and it’s great for people with less of a sweet tooth.
But steer clear of Lidl and Tesco’s spreads, as both have unpleasant after tastes that could ruin even the best toast.
