We love a debut track here on RIDE and this has to be one of the hardest debut singles we’ve heard in a long time. Fresh Out Of Portland by Yayo.upt is a total banger.
Inspired by deeply personal themes. The song came to fruition whilst Yayo was serving an 8-year sentence in a prison appropriately named ‘Portland,’ following a drug related run-in with the law and a 3-month period on the run with no support from family or friends, struggling to survive on the brutal streets.
Portland proved to be the toughest challenge of Yayo’s life as he was estranged from his family and friends who all lived abroad and faced horrific racial abuse. Feeling completely alone and at his wit’s end, two years into his sentence Yayo realised how much he had to talk about and began channelling his deepest thoughts onto the paper in front of him.
After building up quite the expansive discography and freestyling to his friends via the prison phone, Yayo settled on Fresh Out Of Portland, for his debut release which seemed strikingly suited as the perfect soundtrack to the end of his time behind bars.
Sounding like some old school D-Block Europe, this is an absoutle UK trap rap anthem. You can imagine this one making clubs go wild up and down the country. It’s super catchy and without doubt will be on your playlist after hearing it once.
Yayo.upt has knocked it out of the park with this debut anthem. Fresh Out Of Portland is a hit waiting to happen. It’s effortlessly cold and so catchy.
