Celebrity Catchphrase: Stephen Mulhern’s EastEnders ex, the love of his life and excruciating time he messed up on live TV

Published date: September 30 2021

Stephen Mulhern has been around on our TV screen for over two decades now since his first appearance on CITV back in 1998, aged just 21.

The presenter made his name in kids TV as a magician, before moving on to more family presenting duties as the host of hit shows like Britain’s Got Talent, Catchphrase, and In For A Penny.

But there have naturally been a few speed bumps on the way, none more so than when a magic trick he was performing on Blue Peter went completely wrong.

He’s also had a relationship with a star from EastEnders, but revealed in an interview the love of his life is something very different.

Born in East London, Stephen, 44, had market traders for parents, and gained his affinity for magic from his father who taught him tricks as an 11-year-old.

He soon became the youngest ever member of the Magic Circle, which led to him being invited onto Blue Peter in 1997 to show off some of his best tricks, including a brand new metamorphosis one he hadn’t performed before.

However it all went horribly wrong for young Stephen, who explained in an interview with the Mirror : “I had just become the youngest member of The Magic Circle. My dad was like my agent at the time, and he got a call asking me to go on Blue Peter.

“I had to ask a friend to teach me the trick. It completely failed.

“I opened the show live in front of millions, dancing to Take That’s Could It Be Magic. That was the first big mistake.

“Then I couldn’t get my handcuffs off during the trick. It was a diabolical mess on live TV.

“I was sweating profusely. But I survived it. An important rule in show business: keep going and do things with confidence and no one will know any different.”

Later on in his career, Stephen found love with a very famous name from Albert Square.

Between 2008 and 2011 the presenter had a relationship with none other than Honey Mitchell, or rather, the actor who plays her Emma Barton, 44.

The pair met in 2008 when they both starred in the Snow White pantomime at the Marlow Theatre in Canterbury.

They started dating not long after, but kept things low-key.

Sadly three years later in 2011 they decided to call it quits and went their separate ways.

Stephen has revealed who his real true love is though, telling the Mirror: “The greatest love of my life is my piano.

“My dad was a big fan of John Lennon, who had this white grand piano in the corner of his living room.

“After I got my first big job on Saturday morning kids’ TV, I bought one from an old theatre that had been used in various shows, so it felt good.

“I learnt to play at school and I’d jump on a bus and go to a musical school at the weekend in East Ham.”

You can catch Stephen on Celebrity Catchphrase this Saturday on ITV at 6.30pm.
